Easter in Ticino is characterized by Mendrisio's historic processions.
On Thursday, April 18, 2019 at sunset, a procession of figures will animate the historic center of Mendrisio representing the Ascent to the Calvary: legionaries on horseback, a suffering Jesus crowned with thorns, Roman soldiers and 200 other historical figures will come to life in a magical atmosphere. The costumes used for the procession date back to 1898 and were purchased directly from the famous La Scala Theatre of Milan.
The Good Friday procession on April 19, 2019, is the oldest and most solemn of the two: the Virgin Mary and the body of her Son are led through the streets of the village by confraternities and religious. The evocative scenery, besides the dim light of the evening, is created by the magnificent "transparent" (street lamps and illuminated canvases), made by various artists of the region and whose origins range from the seventeenth century to the present day.
An unmissable and unique event, where history becomes spectacle and tradition continues over time!
In Riforma Square and all the streets of the historic center there will be egg hunts, markets, manual laboratories and many shows for adults and children!
Many concerts will take place during the Easter holidays.
