For over 125 years in Capolago, a few steps away from Albergo Ristorante Svizzero, the cogwheel train for the Monte Generoso starts its journey up the mountain.
Along 9 km of breathtaking scenery, with an enviable view of Lake Lugano, you'll reach the summit at an altitude of 1704 m!
Here, on the rocky edge of the mountain, is the "Fiore di Pietra", the new building designed by the famous architect Mario Botta, inspired by the peonies growing on the mountain. Inside, two restaurants will satisfy every palate.
Monte Generoso offers a wide range of excursions, from a relaxing walk surrounded by nature to more challenging ones through the various mountain paths. It is the ideal place to spend time outdoors with friends and family and immerse yourself completely in a magnificent landscape. Among the various itinerants proposed, the ones not to be missed are:
- the Bear Cave , discovered in 1988 and located about 30 minutes away from the "Fiore di Pietra" building on the Italian side of Monte Generoso. This cave, which can be visited from the 27th of May to the 1st of October from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, is a site of important finds of the remains of more than 800 bears who lived on Monte Generoso about 60,000 years ago.
- the "Nevère" Ice Pit path leads you to the discovery of these interesting cylindrical stone buildings, buried for 2/3 of their height, which were filled with snow during the winter and used as fridges by the farmers during summer time!
-the Path-way of the Planets , a real walk among the stars! With a 600-m-long nearly straight and level solar system model at a scale of 1:10 billion and many information boards you can discover all the secrets of the universe!
The view on the Lakes region (Lugano, Como, Varese and Maggiore), on the city of Lugano, the Po Valley and the surrounding Alpine chains will take your breath away for its beauty! In fact, Monte Generoso is the main panoramic peak of the Canton of Ticino. Don't miss the sunsets and the aurora that tinge of spectacular colors both the mountain and the sky!
